Crystal Strait Pledges for Barack Obama

Posted by Kevin Bondelli on May 11, 2008

Today, Young Democrats of America Board Member and Former California Young Democrats President Crystal Strait pledged to vote for Barack Obama for president. Strait is a superdelegate and Democratic National Committee Member from California. Strait is the 276th superdelegate to endorse Obama.  Obama is 155 delegates away from securing the Democratic nomination.

Strait said, “While representing the Young Democrats of America at the DNC, my number one priority is to ensure that young people are fully represented at the polls and in the Party. Barack Obama has shown a real commitment to young voters in his campaign and in response young people have overwhelmingly voted and caucused for Obama in these primary contests. We know that if a young person votes three times in a row for a Party, they become a Party voter for life. We know that because of high youth turnout in 2004 and 2006, 2008 is the third and critical election for young voters. And that’s why I know I want to pledge my delegate vote to Barack Obama.”

Weekend Fun: Cobra Commander - Yes We Shall Video

Posted by Kevin Bondelli on May 9, 2008

I just watched this and thought it would be a nice way to end this week. G4TV parodies the Yes We Can music video for everyone’s favorite GI Joe villain, Cobra Commander. Hat tip to Tech President.

Everything You Wanted to Know About the Republican Jewish Caucus*

Posted by Kevin Bondelli on May 9, 2008

Hijinks, shennanagins, tomfoolery. All valuable and descriptive words that could be used to express the silly and mischievous political stunts of the Republican Jewish Caucus. If only there were a place online that covered such a topic.

Lo and behold! Last month the Young Democrats of America Jewish Caucus launched RJC Watch, a blog with the mission of tracking the misadventures of the Republican Jewish Caucus.

Want to hear how the RJC has distorted a recent Gallup poll? They got it here. How about constantly asking candidates to reject endorsements? They have that too! Most recently RJC Watch has called out the misleading “I Used to be a Democrat” ads. Why, you ask? Because the RJC has been having a hard time finding former Democrats, unless of course they are Democrats that changed affiliation a quarter century ago.

So if you want to keep up on all the political stuntery, subscribe to the RJC Watch RSS feed or add RJC Watch to your bookmarks.

Republican Jewish Coalition Watch is a project of the Young Democrats of America Jewish Caucus (YDAJC; http://www.jewishcaucus.org). YDAJC is an organization dedicated to building the young Democratic Jewish political community. YDAJC seeks to engage young democrats in issues of particular Jewish concern and to invigorate young Jews to engage in politics from a progressive Democratic perspective. YDAJC accomplishes this task through a combination of education, awareness, and social interaction, as well as political advocacy on issues of Jewish concern.

Saturday Night Live Launches Politics Page

Posted by Kevin Bondelli on May 8, 2008

Saturday Night Live has launched its SNL Elections 2008 page, featuring videos from the show, e-cards, and more. Here is a list of some of the features:

  • Political clips from past shows.
  • Obama, Clinton, and McCain e-cards.
  • Vote for all-tim favorite SNL Presidential candidate.
  • Whack-a-pol game.
  • Message boards with threads for each of the three remaining candidates.

Unfortunately the site does absolutely nothing to encourage people to vote. No register to vote button, nada.

Lesssons Learned from First Podcast

Posted by Kevin Bondelli on May 8, 2008

So yesterday I released my first Youth Vote podcast, and I thought I would share what I learned from the experience.

  • Talking to yourself with nobody in the room and not feeling awkward is hard.
  • I would have been better off if I had prepared. The process of thinking “Hey, I should start a podcast today” and publishing it lasted only 3 hours. I wrote down 3 topics to talk about and just talked in a straight take. If I were more prepared I would probably sound better and would have had fewer pauses and “umms.”
  • Audacity, a free open-source sound-editing software actually does a very good job.
  • If you use a laptop’s built-in microphone, you aren’t going to get the best sound quality.

As I keep doing these podcasts I’ll try to make improvements and share what I’m learning along the way for anyone that might be interested in starting their own podcast.

Episode 1 of My Youth Vote Podcast

Posted by Kevin Bondelli on May 7, 2008

Kevin Bondelli’s Youth Vote Podcast Episode #1

Click the link above for the mp3. The sound quality isn’t quite as good as I would like, but I recorded it using the built-in microphone on the laptop and open-source mixing software.

Topics include the Indiana and North Carolina primaries, Indiana voter ID law, Twitter, and the GOP Generational Time Bomb.
