LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY
YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION
The Los Angeles County Democratic Party (LACDP) is the official body of the
Democratic Party in Los Angeles County and the largest local Democratic Party
entity in the United States. LACDP charters Democratic
clubs/organizations, takes endorsement positions on candidates and measures in local races, and
strategically targets and mobilizes for electoral campaign activities
throughout Los Angeles County.
In November 2007, LACDP will be strategically involved in over 120 local
races and will be heavily involved in building the Democratic Party’s
infrastructure in Los Angeles County, such as campaign mobilization and
get-out-the-vote operations, fundraising, special events, and voter outreach/registration.
The intern will be working closely with the LACDP Chairman and the LACDP
staff to assist in maintaining regular Party operations, plan special events,
and work as directed on special campaign related and Party-building activities
prior to the 2008 presidential election.
This internship is ideal for college students or recent graduates who are
interested in becoming involved in Democratic politics. The internship will be
based at the LACDP Headquarters in the mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles
(west of Downtown), but may require some travel to other parts of the County.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Level of involvement depends on the individual’s interest and time
availability. 15-20 hours per week is required.
Projects include, but not limited to:
· Administrative operations, such as filing and data entry
· Democratic Party meeting and special events planning
· Party services, such as mailings and phonebanking
· Volunteer/community outreach and coordination
· Voter registration and outreach
QUALIFICATIONS
The Intern will be expected to:
· Be committed to Democratic Party ideals and values
· Communicate clearly in writing and orally
· Have basic computer and office skills
· Handle multiple projects simultaneously
· Work both independently and as a member of a team
It is preferred, but not required, that the intern:
· Have prior political or campaign experience
· Be proficient in more than one language

Internship, Humanities Council of Washington, DC
BRIEF HISTORY
The Humanities Council of Washington, D.C. is 1 of the 56 affiliates
of The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). It is a private,
nonprofit organization that funds and conducts humanities-based
cultural and educational programs for Washingtonians in every ward.
The HCWDC is not a Federal or a District agency. It is governed by a
23-member volunteer board, five of whom are appointed by the Mayor.
HCWDC is a diverse humanities organization that began in 1980 as a
grant making agency and has grown to become both a funder of
community projects and a provider of programs, ensuring that public
education in the humanities reach diverse audiences across wards,
neighborhoods, and cultures.
The work of the all departments of the Council is extremely time-
sensitive and demands high quality. As the Council has limited
resources, it is imperative each Intern practice effective time
management in the performance of their own duties. In addition,
Interns are expected to communicate their impending work deadlines at
the earliest possible occasion.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:
We have several different opportunities in the following areas:
Programming; Communications; Development; Advocacy; and Grant making.
All interns will be expected to support all staff at the council with
on-going projects. This may take the form of: light clerical work;
research; filing; aspects of event planning; and other general office
support. In addition, interns will be given specific projects related
to the needs divided during the fiscal year. Special projects may
include, targeted research, outreach projects, and film and video
production assistance.
The qualities we are most seeking: Excellent communication skills in
writing. Organization, attention to detail, flexibility,
dependability, and the ability to work in diverse environments with
general public. There may be a small stipend available.
This internship is designed to help students explore the field they
are interested in, and applying classroom skills into true life
scenarios. The Humanities Council is committed to preserving the
District of Columbia’s cultural legacy while transforming the
nation’s capital into a community. For over twenty years, our grants,
programs, publications, and media projects have successfully
fulfilled our mission.

Polling Internship (Fall)

Duties will include number checking and proofreading,
national survey trend tracking, transcription,

Internship: SF, CA Staton Hughes
Staton & Hughes, a political strategy and communications firm in
San Francisco (in SOMA near Caltrain), is seeking an outstanding
intern for a small but busy office for the Fall of 2007 (starting
September).
The firm is dynamic and fast-paced with a wide range of clients,
including Democratic elected officials and candidates for office,
ballot measures, non-profit and civic organizations.
Responsibilities include: general office work, scheduling,
extensive internet research, database work, assistance with and
visits to local campaign events, etc.
Successful applicants will have a professional demeanor and
style, good communication and interpersonal skills, ability to
manage various projects at the same time, and familiarity with
Macs. An applicant should be a motivated self-starter and able
to work well without constant supervision. Volunteer/internship
experience on a campaign highly desirable and an interest in
public affairs, current events, and politics is required, as is
an excellent sense of humor. Modest stipend available and we can
work with your advisor to obtain course credit. A 16-20 hour
per week commitment is requested but flexible.

NCYD Day for the Troops

The Young Democrats of North Carolina will be holding our first-ever state-wide YD day for the Troops on Saturday, September 8th, 2007 at 10:00 am. Since my first post about this event, we have decided upon the exact places in Asheville, Charlotte, Durham, and Jacksonville.
Our purpose is to show our support for the troops and connect with them on a personal level. A large percentage of our troops are actually YD aged (between 18 and 35), and it is our aim to show all of them that we Democrats appreciate them even if we may disagree with the policies they must operate under.
We will also use this day to canvass areas across the state, so it will be a day full of hard work and great reward. Here’s the thing, we need your help.
We need your help to make this a success. We need you to volunteer some of your time on September 8 if you can. If you cannot, please help us collect some of the below supplies for the rack packs we’ll be putting together. You can visit YDNC’s website here for more information.

Former YDAZ President and YDA EVP Selected NMDP Executive Director

Brian S. Colón, Chairman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico, today announced Laura E. Sanchez as his choice for the position of Executive Director. Sanchez is a native of Deming, New Mexico. Her appointment comes at a critical time for the Democratic Party as it gears up for the 2008 election in what is considered a key state in the race for the White House.“Laura Sanchez is a model New Mexico Democrat. Her education and experience will help me advance the electoral prospects of Democrats at all levels. Ms. Sanchez’s knowledge of the state, her life story, legal background, and work experience in legislative bodies and with advocacy groups make her tremendously qualified for this demanding job,” said Chairman Colón.
“I am honored and thrilled to have this exciting opportunity,” said Ms. Sanchez. “The Republicans have sought to systematically tear apart the fabric of our communities: gutting workplace protections, under-funding the educational system, pillaging our environment, and neglecting the health care crisis in America, not to mention continuing to send our young service men and women off to fight a misguided war. Clearly, we need a Democrat in the White House. As Executive Director, I will work to ensure that New Mexico goes blue in November 2008, and elects a Democratic President.”
Ms. Sanchez comes to the DPNM from her position as Energy Solutions Policy Fellow for the Natural Resources Defense Council. She is an attorney who worked as a Senate Majority Analyst assigned to the Judiciary Committee in the 2007 session. Ms. Sanchez has practiced in public finance and commercial real estate transactions in Albuquerque since 2004. During the 2006 campaign, she directed the Get-Out-The-Vote operation for a statewide initiative for the Narragansett Indian Tribe of Rhode Island.
Ms. Sanchez received a Masters in Public Administration and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Arizona in Tucson. She held a number of political and public service positions in Arizona including working for the Pima County Community Services Department, Congressman Ed Pastor, the Office of the Pima County Attorney, and the Arizona State Senate.
Ms. Sanchez received her Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles. During law school, she clerked for the National Partnership for Women & Families in Washington, DC. She also has experience working for the California Legislative Analyst’s Office in Sacramento.
“Selecting someone to lead the staff and run the day to day operations of the state party is one of — if not the — most important decisions of my tenure,” said Chairman Colón. “I campaigned for the position of Chair on the idea of being more fair, energetic, and inclusive, and I am proud that the executive director selection process has met this standard. I am grateful for the executive director search committee’s work with each and every one of the 29 applicants for the position.”
